Q: What is the field of
Pedorthics?
A: Pedorthics is the design, manufacture,
modification and fitting of footwear, including orthotics to
alleviate foot problems caused by overuse, disease, injury or
congenital defects.
Q: What is a C.Ped.?
A: A C.Ped. is a board certified
pedorthist that has demonstrated knowledge and competence in the
field of pedorthics.
Q: What does a
C.Ped. do?
A: A C.Ped. is skilled and trained in the
professional fitting of shoes, modifications to shoes, filling
physician's prescriptions for therapeutic footwear and foot
appliances (such as orthotics), and producing custom shoes.
Q: What is the
difference between a C.Ped. and a podiatrist?
A: A podiatrist (D.P.M.) is a licensed
medical professional that can prescribe medications, perform
surgery, etc. They work directly on the foot itself. In
contrast, a C.Ped. works exclusively on the environment of the foot
and does not diagnose, prescribe or treat any disease, injury or
defect. By working closely with the patient's podiatrist,
orthopedic surgeon, or general practitioner, the C.Ped. can
accommodate most foot conditions and help to maintain the
patient's ambulation.
